Spektra Halo and Spektra Halo 2

Spektra Halo lightweight tattoo machine

The Spektra Halo model started as a crossover machine, and it has gone on to be a powerful option in its category.

With the first installation coming in the form of a Spektra Halo 2, this tattoo machine makes it easy to switch from the cartridge setup to needle operation with relative ease.

The wholly enclosed Halo variant features a 3.5mm stroke with optional stroke models and operates with little noise.

In addition to the above, the Halo 2 builds on that by offering a new “give” mechanism and a high-quality motor for the best performance.

With toolless disassembly packaging to aid easy cleaning and maintenance, the Spektra Halo 2 now features one of the broadest arrangements available on a crossover tattoo machine.

Some of its benefits and limitations are:

– Floating Collet Vise System – this system makes it possible to switch between standard and on-screw tubes for different setups (cartridges or regular).

– Grommet-less needle clip – Counter lever forces are in place to ensure the needle self-stabilizes, eliminating the need for grommets or rubber bands

– Motor efficiency – New, high-quality Swiss Maxon motor is built into the Spektra Halo 2 for optimal motor performance

– Durability – The motor is totally anodized to last longer

– Aesthetics – Every unit of the Spektra Halo & Spektra Halo 2 has been ideally streamlined for better grip and handling. They also come in a variety of 7 different colors.

– Toolless disassembly aids for easy maintenance of the tattoo machine.

Limitation

– Rubber dampening systems would have been preferred to the spring gives.

Spektra Edge and Spektra Edge X

Spektra Edge x

Yet, another successful tattoo machine from these guys that have gotten an improvement is the Spektra Edge series.

The original model was improved by introducing a reinvented vise design in the Edge X model.

With a patented drive mechanism to boot, the Spektra Edge model ship with its very own uniqueness in motor operations.

Aside from the improvements and new design:

Pros

– Hex Drive system – The new patented design of the drive system makes it possible to detach the motor without laying an axial load on the shaft.

– Cross compatibility – the Hex drive in the Spectra Edge X and Edge X models are interchangeable with the Direkt and Direkt 2 models.

– Ease of stroke change – The Edge models make it easy to switch between the 2.4mm – 4.2 mm strokes without needing interchangeable parts.

– Friction management – a new slider material is used to optimize operational efficiency, ensuring parts can last longer.

Cons

– Machine motor tends to develop noise problems after a while of continued use.

– Collet is susceptible to getting worn in after some use.

Spektra Direkt and Spektra Direkt 2

Spektra Direkt 2

Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the Spektra Direkt, which went on to be retained in the improved model, was the zero need for lubrication.

That ensures you can use the motor to complete multiple sessions without worrying about friction.

Speaking of friction, the machine also excelled in being one to produce little to no noises at high or low voltages.

Product quality is at its highest with material sourcing and manufacture in the US.

Advantages and disadvantages found in this model:

Advantages

– Zero maintenance is required.

– Body comes in seven different colors for durability.

– Every unit has interchangeable stroke caps of 2.8mm, 3.4mm, and 4.0mm.

– Compatibility with standard needles and cartridges.

– Silent operation at high or low voltages.

– In-built Hex drive system is cross-compatible with the Spektra Direkt and Edge X motors.

– Strong materials complement lightweight materials to give the best of both worlds.

Cons

– Rubber band is prone to pop off during use.

FK Irons Spektra Xion

Spektra Xion rotary pen

Last, of its kind, they have gone way far with the Spektra Xion as being the first pen-style tattoo machine available for artists.

With the pen style, artists now have more creative flexibility over what they are doing.

Better detailing can be achieved, strokes can be improved, and ergonomics are just a significant improvement.

In a world of bulky rotary motors, this provides the needed break for many to unlock new levels of creative prowess.

Good stuff

– Pen-style makes the Spektra Xion easy to manipulate, just like a pen.

– The lightweight design provides for better handling.

– Needle depth settings can be locked in with the secure ratcheting system.

– The grip features compatibility with all needles.

– A powerful motor bolt system rated at 6W is specially designed for tattooing.

– Autoclaves can be used with the machine’s grip.

No so good

– It might not be the most comfortable machine for beginners due to its size. Perhaps, this could also be an advantage for you if getting to feel a heavy machine.

– It is slightly heavier than other pen models, such as the Cheyenne Hawk Pen Tattoo Machine.

FK Irons Spektra Flux

FK Irons Spektra Flux pen-style wireless rotary tattoo machine

Maybe not the one that most tattoo artists are expecting. The FK Irons Flux is the new pen-style rotary tattoo machine with a unique, wireless technology configuration.

This machine is, from my perspective, one of the best wireless tattoo machines on the market.

The reason behind this is its technology. I know it looks like there is not much to see here, but what is within the frame will ensure quality and performance.

If I had to think about choosing a cordless model, I would go for this one; nevertheless, there are some limitations that, for most of you, are a deal-breaker.

If you love this brand and want to find out if the benefits are worth the investment, I suggest you read our full review.

AL13 Roswell (Coil version)

FK Irons AL13 Roswell coil tattoo machine

I know these guys are well known for designing and manufacturing one of the best rotary machines in the industry. That is why the price.

Even though that is the case, they also have a coil set of machines.

One of the most prominent is the AL13 Roswell. It is sturdy, smooth, and robust.

What I like is the actual weight at 4.85 g. It is not bad for a coil tattoo machine. I guess the reason behind this is the 1.5″ coil used instead of the standard ones.

Another reason to think about is the performance delivered for lining works. Besides that, it is well balanced for shading and packing – not so common for most machines.

Lastly, the paint job. Tattoo artists who are looking for customized machines usually have to pay more for obvious reasons. As a result, they also offer a series of different colors and designs that would be attractive.

Unfortunately, it is not the most affordable one. Regardless, the AL13 Roswell or any of their other two (2) coil models will be a good investment.

FK Irons Tattoo Machine Reviews Wrap Up

Of the four (4) different rotary tattoo machines reviewed above, there is no doubt that you will find a suitable device, no matter if you want to do lining or shading. It’ll depend on the stroke, power, and give.

Of course, other brands also provide high quality and performance, which you can find on our site in the Top Brands Reviews section.

One thing I haven’t mentioned about their wireless technology is that now you can operate any Spektra line with a battery pack called lightningBolt.

This is awesome, considering that most manufacturers only focus on building one cordless tattoo machine rather than a device that can operate any appliance.

For this, you will need to buy their Hoverâ„¢ power supply.

Overall, I think FK Irons has done a pretty good job designing and building solid and reliable rotary and coil tattoo machines that will last for a while.
